This article is an excerpt from the research Formation of Literacy Teachers: Challenges of teaching carried out in the Postgraduate Program Education: Curriculum of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo with support from Capes. This research aimed to present a profile of the teachers in practice in three schools of the municipal network of São Paulo in the Regional Directorate of Butantã (DRE-BT). The research subjects were the regents of the 1st and 2nd years of elementary school. It was used as bibliographic reference Braslavsky, Ferreiro, Noffs, Soares, among other authors. The methodology used was the qualitative approach focusing in the documentary analysis, specific bibliographic reading and interviews. The results showed the gaps in the graduation courses, the need for constant updating on childhood pedagogy, the teaching knowledge essential for their performance and the knowledge of the student.
