Taking the invisibility of the black population in the school curriculum in consideration, this article is based on research carried out with the objective of analyse the proposal and the impacts of the Leituraço Project as a curricular strategy in the public school system, aiming to expand the diversity of literature on representations of blackness. The theoretical referential has as basic concepts: education, afro-descendant culture and curriculum. The qualitative methodology included document analysis and interviews with teachers. The Leituraço Project is an innovative strategy to give new meaning to the hegemonic curriculum by including, in the Reading Rooms, books with black people characters and themes not dealt with in classic books. The results of the study revealed the Project's potentialities in harmony with the concept of humanizing education, in facing the challenges to its continuity and consolidation.
