Schools in border regions in Brazil represent a challenge to the belief in a monolingual nation. In such regions, bilingualism is an ordinary fact in classrooms of basic education, and should therefore figure as an object of teachers education. This paper analyzes the presence of minority languages in school education, particularly considering those that don´t speak Portuguese. This is a theoretical survey that aims to characterize the demand for a school open to the integration of linguistic diversity and to the identities of minority language speakers. The study is divided into three segments: (i) theoretical review; (ii) analysis of the profile of bilingual schools in different regions of Brazil; (iii) argumentation towards the development of linguistic and curricular policies dealing with minority languages in school contexts in Brazil.
