In order to understand the process of standardization of Student Unions developed by a Board of Education of the São Paulo state network in the period from 2013 to 2015, this article presents the results of a quantitative-qualitative research that investigated from the perspective of students and school managers, the consequences of the actions of dynamization of the associations with regard to the encouragement of political participation, youth protagonism and the democratization process of school management. The methodological procedures consisted of collecting quantitative data related to the Student Unions; in the analysis of documentation referring to the performance of the associations of two selected schools; in the application of an open questionnaire for members of the management team; and in the realization of two focus groups with the Union students. The data revealed that, although the work developed has provoked various types of participation in schools, youth protagonism with collective and democratic actions and decisions is still limited.
