This article analyzes the implementation of Brazil’s Federal Law 10.639/03 into basic education in the city of Poconé, in Mato Grosso, through history, arts, and Portuguese teachers’ knowledge and practices. The research was conducted through oral interviews, based on thematic oral history procedures, combining oral records to documentary sources, such as curricular documents and subject bibliography; through qualitative approach, critical and intercultural theoretical perspectives, and decolonial studies; and thinking about how African and Afro-Brazilian history and culture were inserted into the lócus of research. This research hás highlighted racist practices and imaginaries that persist in the school; the challenges faced by the teachers; and that the path to the law’s effective implementation is still long, although important changes have taken place, such as the decolonization of knowledge and practices.
