The purpose of this research is to present how the undergraduate students of a medical course linked to a University Center located in the city of São Paulo, SP, experienced the collection of narratives of illness from people with chronic diseases and the impact caused by said experience. It is a qualitative research developed during the years of 2018 and 2019, whose corpus was composed of field diaries and transcripts of welcoming conversation circles. It was observed that the students highlighted learning aspects which they would not have access following only the anamnesis script, well-marked by interruptions and overly directed towards the disease, a procedure considered to be normal. The influence of the hidden curriculum was clear, but the collection of narratives provided these students with a moment of empathy and active listening, mobilizing affections and emotions.
