This study explores how Brazilian state education departments turned to the internet to address the social distancing caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on an exploratory and descriptive study that analyzed the presence of departments on the internet during the first three months of the pandemic in Brazil, the study highlights the role of digital social networks as the primary communication alternative found by education secretariats to sustain their relationship with students. The data revealed an ongoing crisis with a lack of interaction and collaborative space. The results emphasized difficulties in accessing technologies which posed significant obstacles to the successful implementation of online education, and social networks were predominantly perceived as channels for expressing frustrations and grievances rather than collaborative and learning spaces.

Palabras clave : internet; communication; social distancing; emergency education; state public education.
