Abstract

VERAS, Maura Pardini Bicudo  and  TINEU, Rogério. Socio-racial inequalities in São Paulo - the inclusion of black students and residents of the outskirts of the city in the university: expectations and conflicts. e-Curriculum [online]. 2025, vol.23, e67248.  Epub May 20, 2025. ISSN 1809-3876.  https://doi.org/10.23925/1809-3876.2025v23e67248.

Recognizing racism in Brazilian society, we sought to identify the life expectations and conflicts experienced by young black students in private higher education institutions and residents of peripheral neighborhoods in the city of São Paulo. We sought to analyze socio-spatial and racial inequality as a sociological problem, aiming to uncover the connections with higher education and affirmative action policies. The theoretical framework addresses inequality, urban segregation, and inclusive policies in education. Using a qualitative and quantitative methodology, data analysis allowed us to compare the sample profile of students in popular and elite institutions who acknowledge suffering racism but realize that inclusion has developed awareness of the intersection between race and class, are proud of their origins, and recognize the daily struggle for rights.

Keywords : city of São Paulo; socio-spatial and racial inequality; university education; inclusion; racism.
