This article aimed to indicate the main sources of research used to explore the constitution of the academic field of Special Education. A set of 13 research sources was organized, divided between the three moments that resulted in the academic constitution process of Special Education: 1. Background; 2. Constituent; and 3. Expansion. Based on the concept of Pierre Bourdieu’s field, on authors from the field of Special Education and on authors dealing with the institutionalization of academic fields, it was obtained as results: a) The texts that circulated in Journals on Education and the training of teachers characterized the sources on the theoretical field of Special Education; b) The sources of the constituent moment pointed to the 1960s as the starting point of the academic field, through the offer of the first courses focused on Special Education at the Federal University of Santa Maria - UFSM, until the emergence in 1989, of the Work group GT15 of the National Association of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Education - ANPEd; and c) The moment of expansion of the field was evidenced by the sources, from the 1990s, with the development of the inclusive movement, to the present day. Expansion of research is necessary to strengthen this field.
