Abstract

TODARO, Mônica de Ávila  and  CACHIONI, Meire. Paulo Freire’s legacy on old age: life history and the current Brazilian context. Práxis Educativa [online]. 2021, vol.16, e2116554.  Epub Oct 20, 2021. ISSN 1809-4309.  https://doi.org/10.5212/praxeduc.v.16.16554.047.

Paulo Freire was born on September 19, 1921. He completed 60 years of age in Brazil, since his return from exile took place in 1980. He died before turning 76, therefore, according to the age criterion, he lived through the old age phase for 15 years. In this sense, the purpose of this text is to seek in the work Under the shade of this mango tree, by Freire, reflections on old age. The question that moved us to carry out the study was: What legacy did this creator of pedagogical ideas leave on old age for his readers? The analysis of the work made it possible to identify the concept of old age brought by Freire, in the light of the Brazilian context of population aging and research in the field of Gerontology. It was possible to conclude that the author does not admit that the criteria of old age can be purely those of the calendar, which brought his life story closer to academic-scientific studies on old age.
