Abstract

Is the project of Bildung still viable in a post-modern era and under post-modern conditions? Is Critical Theory still relevant in today's post-modern conditions? Are these two questions related in any meaningful/ interesting manner? In this article the answer to these questions is affirmative. Then another question arises: what lesson does this answer teach us, or what responsibilities does it load onto us with regard to the possibilities which are still open today for counter-education as self-cultivation, reflection, and emancipatory praxis? This article attempts to show that the prospects for today's resistance to the current process of dehumanization, which flow from standardizing education, are still closely linked to the project of Bildung and its re-articulation with the critical thinkers of the School of Frankfurt.
