Knowing the history of Portuguese language in Brazil can contribute to understand some of the difficulties to develop reading and writing competence in children and youngsters. This article thus makes a brief report of how this discipline is approached in Brazilian schools, based on the conception of the prevalent language in each historical context examined, aiming to understand the gap between the new perspectives brought by contemporary linguistic theories and old problems which still determine school failure. It can be concluded that there is, beforehand, the need for a differentiated curricular organization to attend our students’ linguistic reality, focusing on a teaching process of a lively, dynamic and real language.
