VALLE, Ione Ribeiro; BARRICHELLO, Fernanda Araujo y TOMASI, Juliane. Seleção meritocrática versus desigualdades sociais: quem são os inscritos e os classificados nos vestibulares da UFSC (1998-2007)?. Linhas Críticas [online]. 2010, vol.16, n.31, pp.391-418. ISSN 1981-0431.
In this study, inspired by some classic and contemporary sociological reflections, we analyze access to higher public education in Santa Catarina State, using as a reference the entrance exam of the Federal University of Santa Catarina. In this purpose, we went through the decade before the implantation of the quota program for black students and those from public schools (1998-2007). After examining the meritocratic selection mechanisms based on the definition of entrance exam and correlated terms (exam and competition), we study the current legal documents in order to relate some principles established for higher education to the criteria for university admission. Finally, we focus on the empiric data concerning some social characteristics of the candidates who registered and passed the UFSC entrance exam, including: gender, school history, and the educational capital of their parents and family income.
