This paper analyzes the official data on enrollments in special education courses, based on the Sinopses Estatísticas da Educação Básica (Statistical Synopis of Basic Education) conducted and divulged by INEP (National Institute of Educational Studies) in the 1997-2006 period. The analysis was conducted based on collating the data. The following were noticed: an increase in the number of enrollments of special education students in the regular school system, especially in classes without specialized support; an increase of the number of enrollments in special institutions and a reduction in special classes; a low number of enrollments in early childhood education and secondary education; and a significant increase in the number of enrollments of students with visual, hearing, mental, and physical impairment in the regular educational system.
