The goal of this article is to critically analyze, based on linguistic and philosophical principles, Freire’s initial proposal for adult literacy. It uses as an empirical basis the written production of a group of literacy students, to analyze the acquisition process of writing and of reading the world, as shown in their texts. One of the contributions of this study is the critical analysis of Freire’s concept of writing as an act of creation, one of the most intriguing aspects of his theory of knowledge in relation to the role of learners as creative subjects.
