This article is the result of a theoretical study on evaluation. It started from researchers who constitute classic reading on the theme and recent productions that present a critical view on the act of evaluating. It was proposed to understand the meaning of the evaluation based on the Historical-Cultural Theory that has in the Historical-Dialectical Materialism the foundations to understand the constitution of the human psyche. It was found that the meaning of the evaluation comes from work processes - an activity that marks human development. Educational assessment is consistent with the purposes established for education and the concept of assessment is defining the assessment procedures.
