This article consists in an exploratory study that seeks to exercise epistemological vigilance on Bourdieusian analyzes of cultural capital based on empirical research in the Brazilian educational field. To achieve this goal, a literature review was carried out on the Scientific Electronic Library Online journal portal. The examination of the works identified three types of instrumentalization of the concept: the dissociated from the theoretical content, that disregards the phenomena of legitimate culture in the analysis; the mechanic, which assumes that the facts of cultural legitimacy in Brazil are homologous to those of French society, and the relational, that approaches the orientations of the Bourdieusian investigative practice.
