The purpose of the text is to present the challenges of the school manager in the political and organizational configuration of education based on a case study at a state public school, located in the municipality of Delmiro Gouveia, in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. The methodology developed in the research was the qualitative approach and the method was the case study. The technique of data collection was the semi-structured interview conducted with a school administrator. The results of the research pointed out that there are limitations to the experience of democratic management, and that the school manager is the mediator so that the political and normative principles of education are guaranteed in the context of educational practices.
