The offer of distance learning courses (EaD) has had a strong growth in Brazilian higher education, providing an increase in enrollment, at the expense of a proportional shrinkage of enrollment in classroom courses. This article, based on a bibliographic and document-based research, intends to analyze the expansion of the higher education, with special emphasis on pedagogy courses. The article was organized in four parts: in the first one, it was made the analysis of the normative instruments that favored and allowed the expansion of the distance learning courses offer; In the second, there was a brief history of the expansion of higher education in Brazil; In the third part, a quantitative analysis was made of the courses offered by higher education institutions (IES) that participated in the 2017 National Student Performance Exam (ENADE); and finally, in the last part, a primary analysis of the comparative performance of the pedagogical courses of private institutions offered in the distance education modality with the presential ones was traced, from the results of the ENADE of the year of 2017.
