Abstract

ALMERON, Andrews Alves  and  PORTELINHA, Ângela Maria Silveira. Distance education and teacher training: expansion and commodification. J. Pol. Educ-s [online]. 2021, vol.15, e79930.  Epub Sep 01, 2021. ISSN 1981-1969.  https://doi.org/10.5380/jpe.v15i0.79930.

The Brazilian Law of Guidelines and Basis of National Education, no. 9394/1996, reinforces the need for higher education training for K-12 teachers, which has prompted the elaboration of public policies that contribute to the fulfillment of this demand. Distance education (DE) modality is highlighted as a means for meeting the requirements of the legislation. Higher education census data have shown an increase of this modality, on licentiate degrees and on the Pedagogy major in particular, which allows an approximation of higher education to commodity status. Thus, this paper aims to discuss data related to the expansion of DE, specifically on teacher training courses in Brazil and the South-west area of Parana state, pointing to this modality’s articulations with the process of commodification in higher education. A bibliographic research and data analysis were conducted on data available on Higher Education Census and official platforms. The results showed contradictions in a modality based on the age of information and communication demands, and of a socioeconomic environment that unifies human education to market assumptions, and to warn on the need for data analysis on DE.
