Abstract

LUNELLI, Polyana  and  BRUEL, Ana Lorena de Oliveira. School trajectories and socio-spatial segregation in Curitiba: an analysis of students linked to the Bolsa Família Program. J. Pol. Educ-s [online]. 2022, vol.16, e85393.  Epub May 30, 2023. ISSN 1981-1969.  https://doi.org/10.5380/jpe.v16i0.85393.

This article presents an analysis of the school trajectories of students linked to the Bolsa Família Program (BFP), relating the different types of trajectories to the socio-spatial segregation present in the city of Curitiba, verifying the effects of socio-spatial inequalities on school inequalities. Some social indicators were used to support the production of maps of the municipality, which point out the location of schools, relating them to georeferenced data such as per capita income, non-white population, and areas of intervention of the housing policy, comparing the location of schools with territorial inequalities. This quantitative and longitudinal study defined students linked to the BFP and enrolled in the 6th year of elementary schools located in the municipality in 2013 as an initial sample, to follow their paths between 2013 and 2017. Preliminary results suggest that territorial segregation and segmentation of the education system are characteristics present in Curitiba, highlighting the deep inequality in the percentage distribution of students linked to the BFP in educational institutions, which is related to the concentration of poverty in certain areas. In general, the socio-spatial segregation did not impact the students' schooling process and their educational opportunities, when comparing the information regarding the percentage of beneficiary students with the different categories of school trajectories developed throughout the research.
