Abstract

FELISBINO, Eliane; SANTOS, Marcos Rogério dos  and  LIMA, Silvia Maria Amorim. Perception of students who dropped out of higher education: different perspectives on the impact of dropout factors. J. Pol. Educ-s [online]. 2022, vol.16, e87079.  Epub May 30, 2023. ISSN 1981-1969.  https://doi.org/10.5380/jpe.v16i0.87079.

This paper is part of the line of research that seeks to identify predictors that impact school dropout, more precisely in higher education. Student dropout is considered a relatively old phenomenon, though not much problematized in academic studies. Theories that explain this phenomenon in higher education are diverse, some based on common sense, on the meritocratic ideology (gift), and others on the interaction among students with different levels of economic capital (income, goods, wealth), cultural capital (knowledge acquired in their environment), social capital (social and knowledge relations) and the university. From this standpoint, an institutional research, developed by the Dean of Graduation (PROGRAD) of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), sought to identify factors that could be correlated with the dropout situation observed in the institution itself. To this end, a technical group of researchers from PROGRAD created a questionnaire that considered individual, socio-relational, family, economic and institutional issues, which was sent to the 34,184 students considered dropouts in 2019. The institutional research focused on the set of perceptions declared by 1,783 respondents, a total equivalent to 5% of the general sample. From a theoretical and conceptual point of view, we resorted to authors who at different times and places have dealt with the considered theme, while methodologically, for the analysis of secondary data produced by UFPR (2020), the descriptive method was used for a better interpretation and presentation of results. Finally, a discussion is presented on the access and permanence of the black population in higher education.
