Based on the Sociocognitive theories of Motivation, the objectives of the present study were to identify the type of motivation to learn of 225 students enrolled in teacher training courses of both public and private universities of São Paulo, as well as to analyze it in relation to demographic variables. Data was collected through a Likert scale. Intrinsic motivation was predominant in the sample and significant relationships emerged between participants’ type of motivation to learn and demographic variables. Educational implications and directions for further research are presented.
