Abstract

This text analyzed statistical data about the educational situation of Latin America, showing the progress towards universalization of elementary education, in the increase of early childhood education, in the expansion of secondary education and higher education. Showing at the same time, that the investment in education is still low, and the teachers´ salaries and conditions of work obstruct the construction of a school of quality for all. Exemplify with data from reality collected in a study of municipal education in the South Region of Brazil about early childhood education and preparation and qualification of teachers. Argues for a massive investment in education to revert the cycle of low investments e few results in learning and in student achievement.
