The paper examines the process of establishing the field of teacher education, based on five criteria proposed by Garcia (1999): the existence of an object; particular methodology; a community of scientists that sets a code of communication; involvement of teachers in the research development; and acknowledgment by administrators, politicians and researchers that teacher education is a key element in the quality of education. Based on research data, as well as on the many activities of the scientific community, the paper concludes that there have been many improvements in the last ten years towards the establishment of an autonomous field of studies and points out some steps to strengthen the area.
