This study analysed the different types of comprehension questions that can contribute for the development of argumentative skills. Seven groups of Portuguese textbooks (each group containing four books) were analysed and 13 types of question were identified. A low investment in the questions aimed for the development of argumentative skills was found in five, out of seven textbook groups. However, two groups of textbooks revealed great diversity in the type of comprehension questions proposed.
