Abstract

SILVEIRA, Marisa Rosâni Abreu; MEIRA, Janeisi de Lima  and  SILVA, Paulo Vilhena da. The dictionaries of Wittgenstein and of Baruk: linguistic meaning in teaching and learning of mathematics. Educação. Porto Alegre [online]. 2014, vol.37, n.3, pp.390-399. ISSN 1981-2582.  https://doi.org/10.3703/set-dez201407.

In this paper we try to discuss the relationships between natural language, mathematical language and the meaning of linguistic expressions in mathematical texts in situations of teaching and learning. Therefore, we point out the importance of understanding the meaning of the uses of the words in their particular contexts, based on in the case of Wittgenstein, who prepared a german spelling dictionary and in the case of the french re-educator Stella Baruk, who prepared a dictionary of mathematics, exposing the reasons why these authors made their dictionaries. We conclude with some reflections that point to the importance of a satisfactory understanding of the mathematical vocabulary in class.
