Abstract

MOMO, Mariangela. A professor, researcher, photographer and consumer observing post-modern school children. Educação. Porto Alegre [online]. 2015, vol.38, n.1, pp.-. ISSN 1981-2582.  https://doi.org/10.15448/1981-2582.2015.1.18466.

In this paper, childhood is understood as a cultural, social, historical construction that is subject to changes. Contemporary cultural conditions, being marked by the media and consumption habits, have both produced childhoods that are different from the naïve, docile, adult-dependent modern childhood, and modified the ways children experience this period regarded as peculiar to them. Furthermore, the way we see and explain children depends on the theoretical lenses we use. One of the main goals of this paper is to provide visibility to poor children who have attended some schools in Porto Alegre, Brazil, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, by means of the theoretical lenses of the Cultural Studies. In order to provide such visibility, the positions taken by the author along the research process as a professor, researcher, photographer and consumer have enabled her to see contemporary children living their post-modern childhood.
