This article presents a critical analysis of the evolution of words and expressions used in the field of education for children with special needs: disability, special, special educational needs, integration and inclusion. It makes reference both to international organizations and French specificities and, lastly, addresses the ambiguities, contradictions and challenges of inclusive education. Words form things, structure social realities and even create institutions. Therefore, it is essential that educational, as well as health professionals, be attentive to discover in their own practices the obstacles that prevent the participation of all in shared living spaces.
