Abstract

JESUS, Diego Santos Vieira de. Beyond the ivory tower: political options papers and international negotiation planning in the teaching of Foreign Policy Analysis. Educação. Porto Alegre [online]. 2016, vol.39, n.1, pp.56-65. ISSN 1981-2582.  https://doi.org/10.15448/1981-2582.2016.1.20931.

The aim of this paper is to propose the bridging of the gap between theory and practice of international relations in the teaching of Foreign Policy Analysis with the production of political options papers and the planning for international negotiations by the students. The central argument points out that such practical tasks allow the approximation of the students to the political reality of the foreign policy actors and also the use of theoretical tools for a more precise understanding of these issues, experiencing bargaining situations examined by the subfield's specialists and being encouraged to develop strategies to respond to key political challenges. Students can learn new ways of thinking about international relations, enhance the ability to evaluate different ideas, apply different analytical perspectives to political issues and refine their ability to persuade.

Keywords : Theory; Practice; International Relations; Foreign policy Analysis.
