This paper synthesizes six conditions for an emancipatory distance education, results from a Ph.D. research. The focus is the “formation for citizenship”, only possible “by the citizenship”, as consciousness process by the individuals, according to the critical perspective adopted. In addition to literature review, interviews were conducted with experts of distance modality from Brazil, Portugal and Venezuela. The work considers that a citizenship education is able to contribute to the emancipation by the individuals in any modality. And discusses data and situations regarding distance education proposing the following conditions: education by citizenship; collective work; mediated (dialectical mediation) dialogue by the world; participative and flexible design instructional; coherent study materials; and articulation with network social movements.
