Abstract

PALUDO, Conceição; SANTOS, Magda Gisela Cruz dos  and  TADDEI, Paulo Eduardo Dias. Brazilian actuality: the substantive democracy and the Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Educação. Porto Alegre [online]. 2019, vol.42, n.3, pp.396-407.  Epub Feb 10, 2020. ISSN 1981-2582.  https://doi.org/10.15448/1981-2582.2019.3.34086.

Based on the concept of substantive democracy, in this article we analyzed some of the dimensions of the current Brazilian economic, political and social crisis and, based on a bibliographical study, we explained the main contributions of the categories of ‘oppression’ and ‘liberating education’, coined by Freire. The study showed that these categories contributed to the critical analysis of the Brazilian reality and, therefore, to the effectiveness of processes of ‘anti-internalization’ of the bourgeoisie order, as defined by Mészáros (2008). Thus, it is concluded that Freire's work, especially through the categories of ‘oppression’ and ‘liberating education’, is of significant importance for the consolidation of educational processes that contribute to the deepening of a substantive democracy (MÉSZÁROS, 2015), a fundamental element for overcoming sociability founded on the exploration of one class by another.
