This study discusses the use of teaching strategies to promote reading in Elementary School. We analyze research identified in the SciELO.br database focusing on reading at this level of education; we also present a concept of reading and its importance in the socio-educational context, highlighting the role of the school and the educator in the organization of a reading environment; later, the use of didactic strategies for the mediation of reading in the classroom is discussed. The didactics of reading teaching pervades three discussions: planning, development, and evaluation of pedagogical strategies; the use of textual supports and configurations, and the organization of interactive reading environments. It is important to highlight the importance of the socialization of research the subject for teachers and researchers of Elementary School, since the knowledge of pedagogical practices of reading mediation and of evaluation instruments can compose a new range of possibilities of action at this level of education.
