This essay discusses higher education as a public good, criticizing its transformation into a mere market service. Before with the exhaustion of the state and private models of academic organization, unable to handle for the complexity that permeates the empirical reality, aim to reflect and analyze the concept of public good in the non-state public context. The theoretical research field is based on Dewey, Nussbaum and Marginson, among others, to highlight public conceptions, concepts of social commitment and collegiality, as well as the contemporary challenges of higher education institutions in the face of neoliberal hegemony. Finally, through a logical deduction between such a theoretical reference and a review of the literature on community institutions, argument that in order to maintain the status and conception of publics, it is necessary that such universities promote actions aimed at the common good, social responsibility and collegiate and democratic management.
