Abstract

HENRIQUES, Helder Manuel Guerra. Teacher training in Portugal: fights, values and claims in the construction of the teaching profession over the 1st Portuguese Republic. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2015, vol.15, n.46, pp.723-747. ISSN 1981-416X.  https://doi.org/10.7213/dialogo.educ.15.046.DS06.

In this paper, we discuss the construction of the teaching profession in Portugal. We take as a starting point the teacher training directed to the primary education, with particular emphasis in the period of the 1st Portuguese Republic (1910-1926). We intend to demonstrate, taking the School of Primary Cycle Teaching Qualification of the District of Castelo Branco. There, on the one hand, the teaching profession has been constructed from a set of values embodied by central state influence; on the other hand, the importance of the fighting for causes and claims of this group, while in process of formation identity, has a socialization mechanism for the consolidation of the profession within the time span in question. We anchor the work in the History of Education and Sociology of Occupations establishing a dialogue between these two scientific fields. The documentary corpus analyzed is divided between legal and institutional documentation and the pedagogical press produced by the students-teachers. The historical criticism was the methodological approach chosen, because it allows putting in crisis the very sources and challenges in a valid way.
