Abstract

GARCIA, Natalia Carolina. History, memories and forgetfulness of the iconic book “Maestro pueblo o maestro gendarme?” By María Teresa Nidelcoff. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.61, pp.551-575.  Epub Jan 31, 2020. ISSN 1981-416X.  https://doi.org/10.7213/1981-416x.19.061.ds03.

Initially, the manuscript had two editions in Argentina (1974-1975) until it was banned during the last dictatorship (1976-1983). It was also printed in Brazil under the title "Uma escola para o povo" reaching its 38th. reissue (1975-2004), and in Colombia until the 1990s (1974-1994). At the moment, it registers an active lectorate distributed in great part of Latin America circulating in catalogs, theses and academic articles, in the written press, in educational institutes and universities. Despite this massive projection, there is a notable ignorance, confusion or wrong data about the work and its author. This research based on documentary and oral sources, maintains that this responds both to the unique circumstances of its writing, and to a type of propagation that had equal doses of censorship and advertising. In the first aspect, the genesis of the book is reconstructed, making visible conjunctures that were key for its writing in general and in the particular antinomy "pueblo-gendarme"; specifically: the union struggles of teachers, the conflict in the post-conciliar catholic environment and the attempts at pedagogical renewal brought to a community experience since the mid-1960s. The second aspect refers to the timely release of the book abroad, prior to the bibliographic purification of the dictatorial regime on the Argentine educational and cultural field.
