Abstract

ANJOS, Juarez José Tuchinski dos. Documents of the Chamber of Deputies: a source for the history of education in the Empire (1826-1834). Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.61, pp.882-898.  Epub Jan 31, 2020. ISSN 1981-416X.  https://doi.org/10.7213/1981-416x.19.061.ao09.

By adopting the methodological procedures of the theorization of sources (FARIA FILHO, 1997a; NUNES, 2005) and analyzing the historiography of imperial education, this paper aimed at identifying and pointing out the characteristics and possibilities of the existing documentation of the Historical Archives of the Chamber of Deputies, in Brasília (DF), aiming to produce sources for the study of the history of elementary education in the imperial period of Brazil. Chronologically, it covers the period between 1826 and 1834, that is, the phase of centralization of the imperial elementary education. The conclusions pointed out the hypothesis that the documents kept in the Historical Archives of the Chamber of Deputies unveil a dual testimony to the research on the history of education in the Empire: on the one hand, the different political attitudes concerning the child education and school in the country, mediated by political agents designated as representatives of the nation; on the other hand, based on the references to the concrete contexts experienced in the country at that time - particularly in relation to teachers and other people directly involved with the universe of school - the meanings and senses regarding the history of education in the phase of centralization of elementary education, little observed so far, but that may be better evidenced by the study on the type of school and education that was then produced.
