Abstract

NOGUEIRA, Gabriela Medeiros; XAVIER, Eneusa Mariza Pinto  and  ARRIADA, Eduardo. Challenges and possibilities of researching children: a researcher’s perspective. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2023, vol.23, n.76, pp.252-278.  Epub Apr 05, 2023. ISSN 1981-416X.  https://doi.org/10.7213/1981-416x.23.076.ds10.

This paper, whose theme is research into children, introduces data collected throughout an investigation which used interactional ethnography and participant observation and was carried out from 2017 to 2019. It aimed at analyzing literacy practices conducted by a Bible study group in the Pentecostal Church named Casa da Oração located in a rural community in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state, Brazil. This text focuses on the researcher’s perspective in order to identify challenges, possibilities and negotiations in the empirical field which were described in field diaries. Some issues discussed by the text are negotiations and adjustments which were conducted throughout the whole observation; children’s clues to the researcher’s acceptance and rejection; and movements between theory and reality to know and understand the phenomenon under investigation with no prejudice. The researcher underwent a cultural shock since the pentecostal practices caused estrangement. Children’s utterances enabled to understand how they think, feel and value some cultural aspects which are shared with adults in their context. Meanings they attribute to words are usually connected to the context of the Pentecostal Church which the children experience in their everyday life. Children have a posture of evangelizers and express what they experience in the Bible study group.
