Abstract

CASTRO, Thais Helena Chaves de  and  CASTRO JUNIOR, Alberto Nogueira de. Citizen science as an open schooling strategy in biodiversity turning students into responsible actors in Amazonas. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2023, vol.23, n.77, pp.662-675.  Epub Aug 15, 2023. ISSN 1981-416X.  https://doi.org/10.7213/1981-416x.23.077.ds02.

Basic education students (from elementary to high school) use emerging technologies (smartphones, wearables, smartwatches, tablets, etc.) with the typical naturalness of a digital native. However, despite the latest advances in education, teaching practices often do not include technology as a natural means for students to build knowledge. Based on open schooling, this study highlights that learning for the construction of scientific knowledge should start during the formative years of basic education, when students develop critical thinking skills by living with their families, inserted in a community, where they perceive their difficulties and have a desire for change. This research proposes a didactic intervention approach for science classes in the Amazon, using open schooling in Citizen Science projects immersed in technology, where students act as scientists and citizens. The approach went through two studies: the first was the conduction and results of the practice of the open schooling project with citizen science with elementary school students and the other a reflection on the consolidated knowledge in high school students. The results that expand the area of open schooling with citizen science are the involvement of students in the projects and the indication of the need to adopt the perspectives of citizen science and open schooling as an educational path and not just in isolated projects.
