PINTO, Neuza Bertoni  e  FERREIRA, Ana Célia da Costa. O Movimento paranaense de Matemática Moderna: o papel do NEDEM. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2006, vol.06, n.18, pp.113-122. ISSN 1981-416X.

At the end of the 50’s, the impact caused by Sputnik did not only worry the American government, but also the educators that were involved in the scientific instruction of the people all over the world. The scientific and technological pinnacle achieved by the Russians strengthened the preoccupation of several countries with the mathematical education offered to the population, generating an international movement of reform of the teaching of Mathematics, known as New Math Movement, an attempt, in the 60’s and 70’s, to overcome the traditional teaching that had up until the 50’s given priviledge to the Classical Mathematics, the Euclidean model, the Platonic view. In Brazil, this movement was lead by the paulista group - GEEM - coordinated by Oswaldo Sangiorgi, incentiving the creation of study groups with the intention of modernizing the Mathematics taught in the primary and gymnasium levels (the “fundamental” level as it is called in Brazil nowadays). In Paraná, the propagator of the New Math Movement was NEDEM - in Portuguese the “Nucleus of Study and Development of Math Teaching” - created and coordinated by Osny Antonio Dacol, principal of “Colégio Estadual do Paraná” (Paraná State Gymnasium). Initially working with experimental groups in the biggest school of the state, NEDEM elaborated its proposal of New Mathematics that was later published in two series of school books that came to be adopted by the schools of Paraná for over two decades. Such initiatives had its significant mark on the teaching of Mathematics in Paraná. The repercussion of the movement had its peak in the 60’s and at the end of the 70’s, and even after the extinction of the group, the seeds sown by the members of NEDEM left its marks in the history of Mathematics education in Paraná, especially due to the intense and democratical work of spreading the movement throughout the state education of Paraná.
