The authors discourse about three fundamental and interconnected aspects in Religious Education (RE): the legal support for the above mentioned curricular component, the definition of contents and the specific training of teachers. The approach to the theme is subdivided into two parts: explanation of the legal requirements and of the specific legislation about the training of RE teachers and a presentation of experiences and alternatives encountered at the national level and in different states relating to the training of RE teachers. The article culminates with final ‘pro-vocations’ pointing out considerations and demands in terms of procedures with regards to the initial and continuing education of RE teachers.
