Abstract

This article tries to examine the new model of religious education defined by federal law 9.475/97, which changes article 33 of LBD from year 1996. The new model of religious education chases away from all forms of confessionalism and proselytism trying to be in accord with the current pluralism of brazilian religious field. The study also includes issues such as laity, secularization and the relation between State and the Catholic Church which are closely related with religious education in public schools.
