Citizenship building relevant mediate, the didactic book is presented in this article as a material of indispensable support to school knowledge materialization and as basic element to the students scholarization process. Analyzing the didactic book historical trajectory, in the scope of public politics and Brazilian legislation, the article argues the possibilities and limitations of the actions that, in different historical periods, they tried to give assistance to student and to guarantee his right of to educate himself in a school. The article detaches since the first initiatives of the INL (National Institute of the Book) until the advances gotten from the FNDE (National Fund for Development of Education) which programs successively come extending the gratuitous distribution of this material to basic education students. Showing as, from the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, the Didactic Book National Program (PNL) has improved the process of assistance to the student, the study discusses the didactic book distribution as a necessary investment to the quality of the learning at schools and it is essential in the effectivation of the right to the education of the majority of student population.
