The current article presents some aspects of a research about science school subject’s history, carried out in a PhD thesis concerning education history. It aims to understand the historical process occurred on the nineteen century, at Portuguese high schools that were introducing science school subjects in their lecture. It is usual in science school subject to have specific equipment in their labs or offices as an annex to the class room. In 1854, when teaching sciences began in high school, it was considered essential such materials, so it was promptly made available some paraphernalia and chemical reagents. According to this fact, it was then made an approach about the provided materials and some teachers’ reaction. In this context, it emphasizes the autonomy of high school science professors formulating their school subjects, despite, the centralize tendency of the public instruction main organs.
