This paper presents some considerations about the teaching of Arithmetic in primary school during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in São Paulo. The theoretical framework is rooted in cultural historical studies, particularly in the field of History of School Subjects prepared by André Chervel. This research was performed using Arithmetic textbooks, that circulated during that period, as privileged sources. Four titles were selected to illustrate some methodological issues and concepts of teaching arithmetic at that time. The features of the intuitive education presented in the original proposal of school groups of São Paulo are highlighted in the final considerations.
