This article elaborates on a dialogue between two researchers who developed their work based on the use of qualitative methodologies. Both researchers seek to discuss this type of investigation to comprehend teachers’ formation from a wider perspective, considering the importance of biographical elements in teachers’ identity formation. The text discusses the analytical potential emerged from teachers’ biographies and from the in-depth interviews in investigations about teachers’ formation and action. The research results indicate that these social structures and the historical process perform an important role in the definition of life trajectory of people and that this course interferes in the process of teachers’ formation. Thus, it is necessary to better understand this process in order to rethink the belief that theory might modify practice, without considering the complex networks of knowledge, values, desires, hopes and intentions configured during the personal and professional trajectory of each individual.
