This study analyses reading comprehension of Spanish as a foreign language among Brazilian learners. Participants were 67 students of 8th and 9th years of elementary school in a public school of Curitiba, Parana, Brazil. Several instruments of data collection were used to evaluate linguistic and metalinguistic skills that influence the capacity of text comprehension and, also, to analyze possible relations between the performance in the comprehension of texts in Portuguese and Spanish. Results showed an expressive relation between the syntactic task of grammar correction and comprehension of Spanish texts. It was also verified among participants that the comprehension of texts read in Spanish offered them clues to infer the meaning of unknown words encountered during reading. Furthermore, a significant relation was found between the performance in reading of texts in Portuguese and Spanish. However, there was no significant relationship between the command of receptive vocabulary and the comprehension of Spanish texts. It is suggested that, in the process of teaching Spanish as a foreign language, teachers should use the text as a basis for pedagogical work, guiding students to use the context (meaning of the text) to identify unknown words as well as to apprehend the diverse structures of the language (from the most simple to the most complex), in order to acquire progressively the linguistic and metalinguistic skills that promote a greater command of Spanish.
