PAVAN, Ruth. Diversidade cultural, desigualdade e exclusão: um encontro com professores da educação básica. Rev. Diálogo Educ. [online]. 2013, vol.13, n.39, pp.711-727. ISSN 1981-416X.

This paper has stemmed from a research funded by CNPq which analyzes teachers’ understanding of exclusion processes both in society and in basic education. The study comprehends only teachers working with the final grades of elementary school. The analysis process has been grounded on theorists that have highlighted exclusion and inequality from a critical perspective, i.e, they advocate that exclusion and inequality have derived from asymmetric and unequal social relationships, rather than caused by the subjects themselves. In order to identify the teachers’ point of view, we conducted interviews with eight final-grade elementary school teachers from different knowledge areas. The analysis has evidenced that exclusion/inequality, whenever noticed, are not only related to economical issues, but also to race, belief, generation and gender issues, among others. Few teachers claim that exclusion processes can be found at school, but all of them admit the existence of exclusion processes in society. This way of regarding exclusion processes is related to teacher education processes. Teacher education only included the discussion about inequality in the 1980’s, and cultural diversity and exclusion issues have only recently been included. In this sense, this research may contribute to a critical understanding of the respondents’ answers and provide hints for the qualification of the teacher education process.
