This paper aims to discuss the issue of teaching authority in the current school having as research field 20 public schools of Curitiba and metropolitan region, being 9 state and 11 municipal schools. One of the recurring themes reported as a major problem of education nowadays by professionals was the loss of authority in the relationship with the students. Such fact can also be seen when we consider the literature on the subject. The authors point out that one of the main issues of contemporary school, regarding the teacher-student relationship is related to the decline of the teaching authority. The paper tries to understand what is the authority, differentiating it from the authoritarianism. It also seeks to question the authority relations at school as well as the foundations that constitute them. The fieldwork was conducted during three years of participant observation in schools chosen by the survey, which allowed monitoring of institutional routines intensely.
