The text discusses research on the history of mathematics education in elementary school. The questioning is made from five themes, taking into account the centrality of knowledge in the primary school. The issues involve the mathematical knowledge in historical perspective, considering the aims of elementary school, its organization, its methods and content, new referents for analysis of knowledge and, finally, aspects relating to the affiliation of research in the history of mathematics education in the scientific fields. Finally, taking into account the analysis of the five themes considered "enjeux" of the research show the differences of investigations in the history of mathematics education at secondary and higher level, and the history of mathematics education in elementar school.
